Practical Guidance for School Leaders

Short, usable checklists drawn from the work HSSS does on campuses every week. Use them with your own team, or ask us to help you put them in place.

Checklists

Start Where Your School Needs the Most Help

Health-Room Readiness

What a well-run school health room needs day to day.

  • Keep student health plans current and easy to locate
  • Post allergy, asthma, diabetes and seizure action steps where staff can see them
  • Confirm emergency supplies and expiration dates each semester
  • Standardize the daily health log and parent-notification wording
  • Plan on-site student health support ahead of field trips and athletic events

Starting a Tutoring Block

A simple structure for after-school academic support.

  • Pick two or three focus skills instead of general homework help
  • Keep groups small and consistent week to week
  • Use a five-minute check-in to open every session
  • Share short progress notes with classroom teachers
  • Celebrate effort and attendance, not only scores

Beginner-Friendly Athletics

How to build a team when most students are brand new.

  • Teach one fundamental per practice and repeat it often
  • Give every athlete meaningful minutes early in the season
  • Set team norms around effort, sportsmanship and encouragement
  • Build conditioning gradually and monitor hydration
  • Invite families to a showcase practice mid-season

Family Engagement Events

Turning a school night into a real community moment.

  • Choose one clear purpose for the event
  • Send invitations twice, in more than one language when needed
  • Assign every volunteer a named role and a start time
  • Offer a student-led element so families come to see their child
  • Collect one piece of feedback before families leave

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can HSSS start supporting our school?
Timelines depend on the service and the credentials required. Event and administrative support can often begin quickly; health and instructional roles require verification of qualifications and school documentation first.
Do we have to commit to a full year?
No. Schools can book hourly, daily, short-term, seasonal or event-based support, and many partnerships begin with a single immediate need.
Are HSSS staff background checked?
Onboarding, documentation and screening requirements are coordinated with the school and completed in accordance with school requirements before an assignment begins when applicable.
Can HSSS combine several services in one agreement?
Yes. Working with one partner across health, academics, athletics and operations is the most common way schools use HSSS.

Want Help Putting These Into Practice?

HSSS can work alongside your team to set up health-room systems, launch a tutoring block, build a beginner athletic program or run your next family engagement night.
